It’s important to protect and clean your memory foam mattress to help increase its lifespan, so you can get a better night’s sleep for longer. It’s not enough to only clean your bedding, as dust mites and bacteria will still naturally build up over time. A clean mattress will also improve your sleep quality, minimise any allergy symptoms and ensure you feel healthier and fresher at night.
How often should I clean my memory foam mattress?
It’s recommended to clean your memory foam mattress every four to six months to get rid of germs, or more often if you suffer from allergies. If you notice any unpleasant smells or stains, clean your memory foam mattress straight away to keep it in good condition.
6 simple steps to clean your memory foam mattress
You’ll need your vacuum cleaner, baking soda, mild laundry detergent, a bowl of warm water and a white cloth to clean your memory foam mattress.
1. Remove your bedding and wash at 60°C
Take off bedding and pillowcases and put everything on a hot 60°C wash using a gentle detergent, as this will kill any bacteria or dust mites.
2. Vacuum your memory foam mattress
Thoroughly vacuum away any hair, crumbs or debris leftover on your memory foam mattress, making sure to clean any nooks and crannies. Don’t forget to vacuum the sides as well.
3. Deodorise with baking soda
Sprinkle baking soda all over your memory foam mattress and leave for around 30 minutes. This will deodorise your mattress and remove any unpleasant odours, leaving a fresher smell. After you’ve let the baking soda sink in for long enough, vacuum it up from your memory foam mattress.
4. Spot clean stains with a homemade cleaning solution
To spot clean your memory foam mattress, create a mild cleaning solution using a bowl of warm water and a small amount of mild detergent mixed in. Dip a white cloth into the cleaning solution and gently rub stains in a circular motion, being careful to not let your mattress get very wet, as it will be difficult to dry properly.
If you’re worried about getting your memory foam mattress too wet, use a spray bottle instead to carefully spot clean stains.
5. Let your memory foam mattress air dry
Allow your memory foam mattress to completely dry – this should take a few hours, but it may be as long as overnight, so make other sleeping arrangements before cleaning. Keep your bedroom windows open or turn on a fan to help speed up the process. Let in sunlight too, as the heat will help to dry your mattress properly.
6. Put on fresh bedding
Once your memory foam mattress is fully dry, put on clean bedding and pillowcases and then enjoy a fresher night’s sleep!
How to clean tough stains from my memory foam mattress?
Spot clean your mattress by gently rubbing away stains using a white cloth and a gentle cleaning solution. For really tough stains, you can do a deeper clean with a small amount of white vinegar mixed with warm water. The white vinegar should dry odourless, but if the smell still lingers, deodorise your memory foam mattress with baking soda again to keep it smelling fresh.
Can you steam clean a memory foam mattress?
You should be able to fully sanitise your memory foam mattress by steam cleaning it, but always check the care label first.
